Night Assault and Sneak Attack

This morning, I went to the front yard and found that the grass and earth under two oak trees had been the victim of attack! Here are a couple of photos. Does anyone have any idea what would do this overnight? I know that armadillos can leave a hole or three in the yard sometimes, but this is a full scale assault!
