Before trotting off to think of the folly of taking up a dare from the tag team named Fim and Keiliss, I thought I'd share. There are times when you find yourself in the right place at just the moment that something amazing happens... something that you know you will never witness again, and only did so by the purest chance. That happened today.
I feed deer just across the road from my house. They congregate in the afternoon waiting. There are two black buck antelope that live in the pasture as well...a male and a female. They are so familiar with me that I am totally ignored now. OK, that sort of sets this up.
I was walking down the little country lane that runs in front of my house. There was nobody around. All was quiet and peaceful. A glance to the north revealed the two antelope grazing in the middle of a field. They didn't even look up as I walked by. A few cows (maybe five) were at the far east end of the field. I wasn't paying much attention to them. When a group of about 10 young calves ran into the field, my first thought was of young ones out for a romp. Instead I saw in their midst a baby antelope. They were chasing the poor thing for fun!
I froze, wondering what to do. If I climbed the fence to scare off the calves, I'd further frighten the antelope but I *had* to do something. It was then, while I was frozen in uncertainty, that it happened. The male antelope looked up and saw his baby being threatened. He ran full out straight into the middle of that group of calves, never slowing his stride. The speed of the antelope was incredible. His two long spear like horns were nothing more than a blur.
Calves scattered in every direction. He swerved, circled the little antelope and slowed his pace, leading the baby into the brush. I don't know who was more stunned, me or the calves. It was breath taking to watch a wild animal protecting its young. Unexpected as well.
OK, now I'm going to speak with my evil and totally twisted plot bunny about sending a few of his friends to haunt Fim and Keiliss!
