I've recently had cause to wonder how often the preconceived ideals of readers shape or affect a story line (AU fan fiction). At what point do the preconceived ideals of readers restrict the writing process? Are certain characters untouchable? Are some simply off limits to certain characterizations? Then there is the question of readers over-writing a character with their own notions and refusing to accept that of the writer, no matter how well laid out. Where does an author's responsibility to readers end? Do writers need to maintain a balance between what they wish to write and what a reader can accept? Or can they give their readers a story diametrically opposed to conventional thinking or ideals? Are there certain stories that should not be posted? Finally, at what point should a plot bunny be cast to the wind as too dangerous to play with? Yes, I've a specific plot bunny in mind. (No, I am not saying what it is. I've learned my lesson.) .
