I had a scary and very unwanted visitor last night!

Late last night, my little dog ignored me when I called for her to come inside. In my jammies, I went down the steps to get her. She rolled onto her back, so I assumed she wanted a belly rub. Thus, I gave her a good rub and cuddle. Since she wasn't inclined to move, I picked her up and started up the steps. As soon as I stepped on the first step, a horridly familiar sound broke the silence.

A rattlesnake was making itself known. So, I put my little girl in the house and like a fool grabbed a flashlight and went back onto the porch. Lol, I then had the sudden realization that going out into the dark, armed with nothing but a weak little flashlight, was a really bad idea. I went back inside and got the .22 out of the closet. I rushed out the back door, intent on getting into the car and using headlights to illuminate the area. As with the flashlight, I had a sudden thought...the gun isn't loaded. Lol, went back inside and found the .22 shells. There were only six and I did not feel comfortable at my chances. Still, there wasn't an alternative other than letting the thing be and hoping it didn't bite me or my dogs. So, I loaded the gun and drove around to the front yard.

A four foot rattlesnake was coiled up, looking at me ready to strike. It wasn't more than two feet from where I pet and cuddled my little dog. I could have reached out and petted the thing. After the 'OMG I could have been bitten' moment, I stepped out of the car and tried to lean the barrel of the shotgun on the car's door. It was so dark that I couldn't see the gun sight. Slowly, I stepped closer. It started rattling louder. I froze. Shakily, I shot and missed. The snake jumped about two feet toward me, trying to strike. I did a quick back step. Shot again. Again, I missed. Again, the snake tried to strike. Shot again and hit it lower on its body. It did nothing but piss the snake off. It tried to strike again. OK, my hands are really shaking by this time, and I only have three shells left. I sat down and took several deep breaths. Then I very very slowly got a little closer. Two shots hit the snake's back, but it was still moving. Not sure if the third shot hit the thing or not.

It undulated for a good 30 minutes with me in the car thinking 'now what' and coming up with no answers. Finally, it was only moving in slow motion, as if it were trying to rattle but was unable to do so. I fetched a hoe and pulled it away from the steps. Lol, I was soooo scared when doing that. It is now dead and covered with dirt. Both my dog and I are still a little shaken and mom thinks it is cute. OMG that woman is irritating at times. Anyway, I'm out of shotgun shells, so hoping none of the snakes friends or family come for a visit. It is time to read fanfic and forget about it.
