My Double Standard Rant
Jan. 10th, 2005 03:06 pmNeed to rant, so fair warning... This has been said by others who express themselves far better than I will here, but I have to get it out. I entered a room to find a dear friend (a woman) embroiled in a discussion about homosexuality with her brother and four of his friends (male). She was speaking for homosexual rights and being blasted for it. They actually said that sex between women is OK though and grinned. REALLY! They said that to us!
Upon asking "And just why is that?" I was informed that watching two women have sex is the stuff of fantasy. There was general agreement among the men. A few choice slash fics popped into my mind so I replied that watching two men make love was a fantasy of mine. This met with intakes of breath and looks ranging from disbelief to disgust. Of course, being me, I demanded to know why it was alright for them to fantasize about two women, but wrong of me to fantasize about two men. I was informed "that is different" "that is just sick" "it is perverted" and "it is a sin".
The double standard just boggles the mind. Why are women more accepting than men of m/m sex? In the slash community, most authors that I know are women. Their writing typically portrays m/m as beautiful whether it be in the form of lusty sex or making love. Love between two people is a beautiful thing. I do not understand judgement and condemnation of two people in love. My uncle just retired with his partner of 40+ years. How can a love that strong and deep be wrong?
Just had to get that out. The thought process involved just floored me.
